Understanding Military Spousal Support

Spousal support, or alimony, is a payment made from one former spouse to the other following divorce. The amount of spousal support for a military member is determined based on state standards where the divorce is filed.

In a military divorce, basic allowance for housing (BAH) is considered in determining spousal support. A number of other factors are considered, including ability to pay, earning capacity of receiving spouse, age, and length of marriage.
